On the 9th and 10th of February, I had the pleasure of delivering a Scissor Lift Novice course for Ben, Josh, Gary and James at Unique Seaflex. Two days, plenty of practical work, and just the right amount of height involved.

When your brewery is as busy as Goddards , keeping things moving smoothly behind the scenes is just as important as what comes out of the taps. Recently, two of their team members, Bob and Albie , spent a day sharpening their warehouse skills with Wight Training Services, completing an Experienced Reach Truck Forklift Course under the guidance of instructor Tim Benton .

Before even stepping onto the machine, Bob and Albie carried out thorough pre-use checks , ensuring the Toyota reach truck was safe and ready to operate. “Those checks are vital,” explains Tim. “A quick inspection before you start can prevent accidents and keep both the operator and equipment in good shape.”

Once the checks were done, the real work began. The pair moved through a series of practical exercises designed to refine positioning, precision, and safe handling — essential when you’re operating in a warehouse full of valuable stock (or, in this case, some rather special beer!).

Before climbing into the basket, both operators carried out essential pre-use checks , ensuring the equipment was safe and ready for work. These inspections are the first line of defence against accidents, giving operators the assurance that everything is functioning as it should.

As part of their training, Rob and Morgan also measured wind speeds at different heights . With access platforms, weather conditions can make all the difference. By monitoring wind speeds, they gained a clear understanding of safe working limits — a vital skill for anyone operating at height, especially on exposed sites.

The Hinowa Lightlift 20.10 itself proved an excellent training platform. Compact enough to fit through narrow access points yet powerful enough to reach 20 metres vertically and 10 metres horizontally , it’s a machine that requires skill and respect. Its spider-leg stabilisers make it ideal for uneven ground, but correct set-up is critical, which is why practical exercises are such an important part of training.

After a great training session in June, Wight Training Services was invited back to AA Coombes’ Bembridge yard in September 2025. This time it was Ethan’s turn on the forklift, and he absolutely nailed it – passing his B1 Counterbalance course with confidence.

The B1 category covers counterbalance forklifts up to 5 tonnes , making it the perfect fit for boatyard logistics where moving parts, equipment and materials safely is a daily task.

But it wasn’t just about forklifts this visit. The whole team got hands-on with some slinger/signaller training , learning the ropes of safe crane operations.

When a crane is at work, the slinger/signaller is the eyes and ears on the ground. This training gives staff the skills to:

Sydenhams' Dan Attrill steps into a new role with a Vehicle Mounted Loader course on the Isle of Wight.

Big congratulations to Dan Attrill , a long-serving member of the Sydenhams Newport team, who recently added another string to his bow by completing his Vehicle Mounted Loader course with us here at Wight Training Services.

Having recently passed his HGV licence, Dan’s now fully equipped to step into the role of relief driver, helping to deliver Sydenhams’ trusted timber and building supplies across the Isle of Wight and beyond. His HIAB-style training was delivered on-site using Sydenhams’ own vehicle, giving Dan a chance to train in familiar surroundings with the exact equipment he’ll be using day to day.

For anyone wondering—yes, the Vehicle Mounted Loader course is the same as what most people know as a HIAB course . HIAB is actually a brand name, much like ‘Hoover’ is for vacuum cleaners, and refers to a type of hydraulic loader crane mounted on a lorry. The training covers how to operate any similar vehicle-mounted loader safely and confidently.

Under UK law, there’s no official government-issued forklift licence. Instead, what’s required is adequate training and proof of competence to operate a forklift truck safely. Stricter rules for Mobile Elevating Work Platform tests are coming—make sure your staff are prepared and properly certified.

If you operate a workplace where Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) are in use—like scissor lifts, cherry pickers or boom lifts—there’s an important update coming that you’ll want to know about. From 1st November 2025 , the way MEWP operators are assessed is changing across the UK. As the owner of Wight Training Services , I want to break it down clearly, so you can make sure your staff stay safe and compliant.

The Accrediting Bodies Association (ABA) is rolling out a new, standardised version of the Basic Operating Skills Test for MEWPs. This includes practical assessments, pre-use checks, and theory exams. The goal? To raise the bar on safety and make sure every operator—whether they’re using a scissor lift in a warehouse or a boom lift on a construction site—has the skills and awareness needed to do the job properly.

“It’s a big step forward,” says Tim Benton. “These updated tests reflect real-life working conditions much better and focus on the key things that keep people safe on the job.”

So, what’s changing?

1. Stronger Practical Assessments
Operators will be tested on more realistic and varied tasks, with a closer focus on safe handling and operation in real work environments.

2. More Emphasis on Pre-Use Inspections
A new inspection component will require operators to demonstrate proper checks before using any equipment—something I’ve always highlighted during training sessions. It’s often the first line of defence in preventing accidents.

3. Updated Theory Test
The theory exam now includes 20 multiple-choice and 5 multiple-selection questions , ensuring operators not only know how to use the equipment but understand the regulations, safety protocols, and emergency procedures.

“This isn’t about making things harder—it’s about making sure operators are genuinely ready for the job,” I often tell employers. “Too often we see people with a certificate who’ve never faced the real risks involved. That’s what these changes are fixing.”

What should you do now?

From 1st May 2025 , these new tests can be used by accredited providers like Wight Training Services—but by 1st November , they’ll be mandatory. I recommend planning your staff’s refresher or new training sessions sooner rather than later, so they can benefit from the new standard and avoid any last-minute scrambles later in the year.
