Carli Takes the Controls: A Young Operator’s Telehandler Novice Journey on the Isle of Wight
How a three-day telehandler course helped Carli add “another string to her bow” with on-site, accredited training.
TL;DR:
- Carli completed a three-day Telehandler Novice Course on a SANY STH1440
- Training covered safety checks, steering modes, loads, stability and real-world tasks
- Delivered on-site using familiar equipment
- Ideal for beginners with no previous experience
- Accredited, practical and tailored to workplace needs
When Carli stepped up for her Telehandler Novice Course, she was determined to add “another string to her bow.” And she did just that. Watching her progress from the first walk-round check to confidently handling the SANY STH1440 was a brilliant reminder of why I love teaching newcomers to the industry.
The telehandler novice programme runs over three full days, designed specifically for people with little or no previous experience. It’s a structured course that builds skills steadily, starting with the basics and layering on confidence through practical, site-based tasks. Carli trained on the same SANY STH1440 machine featured in a couple of our field-office stories – a robust, reliable workhorse and ideal for beginners.
Day One: Foundations and Familiarisation
We begin with the essentials: safety legislation, risk awareness, stability principles and machine controls. Before the engine even starts, trainees learn how to carry out thorough pre-use checks.
Carli took to this immediately. “It’s good to know why you check things, not just how,” she mentioned during the walk-round. Novice operators often find this day surprisingly engaging — it sets the tone for safe practice for years to come.
Day Two: Manoeuvring, Steering Modes and Practical Handling
Telehandlers can feel big, especially the first time you lift a pallet at height. Day two is all about getting comfortable with the machine — forward reach, three steering modes, confined manoeuvres, and accurate placement.
Carli nailed this. Calm movements, steady approach, tidy positioning. You could see her confidence rising hour by hour.
Day Three: Real-World Loads and the Final Assessment
The final day mimics typical workplace tasks: loading, unloading, stacking, travel with load and using the boom at different heights and distances. It’s a busy day, designed to prepare operators for actual productivity on site.
By assessment time, Carli was operating with smooth, controlled confidence. A brilliant achievement for someone who arrived on day one with zero telehandler experience.
Her success shows exactly what the Novice Course is for: building safe, capable new operators who can step onto site with genuine awareness, ability and professionalism.
