Keeping Skills Sharp: Vehicle Mounted Loader Refresher Training at Sydenhams Ryde

Why regular refresher training keeps operators confident, compliant, and safe on the job

TL;DR:

  • Refresher training keeps operators competent and confident
  • Helps meet legal duties and reduce workplace risks
  • Training on-site with familiar equipment boosts real-world safety
  • Ideal for busy merchant depots like Sydenhams Ryde
  • Quick, cost-effective way to maintain compliance

This week I was over at Sydenhams Ryde, where Andy completed his Vehicle Mounted Loader refresher using the depot’s own equipment.

It’s always great working with a long-established and respected business like Sydenhams. They’ve been supplying timber and building materials since 1874, growing from a small operation in Poole to a major independent merchant group with 33 branches across the Central South West. Their Ryde site is busy, fast-moving, and the perfect setting for practical workplace training.

Refresher training for a Vehicle Mounted Loader isn’t just a tick-box exercise. These machines are used daily in builders merchants, timber yards, and distribution areas, often in tight spaces and on uneven ground. Even experienced operators benefit from regular updates to keep technique sharp and reduce the risk of accidents.

As I often say to clients:
“A refresher isn’t about teaching someone how to do their job – it’s about making sure they’re doing it safely, confidently, and in line with current standards.”

For operators like Andy, working on their own equipment means the session feels natural and immediately relevant. They’re practising real tasks in the real environment they face every day. On a busy depot like Sydenhams Ryde, that familiarity makes a genuine difference to workplace safety.

We covered the key points required by industry standards: safe attachment handling, correct stabiliser use, loading techniques, risk awareness, and daily checks. Small improvements in technique can make a huge difference in efficiency and safety over a full working week.

Regular refresher training also helps employers meet their legal responsibilities under PUWER and HSE guidance. It keeps teams compliant, prevents bad habits creeping in, and reduces downtime through avoidable incidents.

A big well done to Andy for completing his refresher – another safe and capable operator helping keep Sydenhams’ Ryde depot running smoothly.
