I spent the day at Lift Schools Ryde, delivering Mobile Scaffold Tower training to two members of staff who were putting up a new banner at the Sixth Form campus. It’s always a pleasure working with organisations that have a strong sense of community, and Lift Schools certainly fits that description.
Their ethos of kindness, bravery and warmth comes across the moment you step onto the site.
The team were preparing to install a high-level banner welcoming students to the Sixth Form campus, so it was the perfect opportunity to run a practical, hands-on session on safe tower use. Mobile scaffold towers are incredibly useful pieces of equipment, but only when they’re built, moved and used correctly. A small mistake at height can have serious consequences, so proper training is essential for schools, caretakers, and facilities teams.
We covered the full process: checking components, safe assembly, correct bracing, guardrails, platform positioning, and how to assess surroundings before climbing. As I often tell delegates:
“A tower is only as safe as the person who built it. Get the foundations right, and everything else falls into place.”
Training on-site at the Lift Schools Ryde campus made the session especially valuable. The delegates used the exact tower they work with and tackled a real task — positioning and fixing the large Sixth Form banner high on the wall. Working in a familiar environment helps build confidence and ensures the learning transfers directly into their day-to-day work.
Lift Schools is part of a trust of 57 schools across the country, most rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’, and it’s easy to see why. The professionalism and care shown by the team reflect a wider culture of safety, responsibility and pride. Making sure staff are trained to work safely at height is just another example of their commitment to maintaining a secure, supportive environment for students and visitors alike.
Well done to the team for completing the course and carrying out the task safely and confidently. The banner looks excellent — and more importantly, it was installed the right way.
