A bit of dumper training before heading across the water
This time I was out with Paul, who is preparing for a move from the Isle of Wight to the mainland.
Before he goes, there was an important job to get sorted: his
experienced dumper course.
As you can see from the photos, this wasn’t a case of sitting indoors talking about dumpers all day. Paul was out with the machine, carrying out his checks and demonstrating the practical skills expected of an experienced operator.
It starts before you turn the key
One of the things I always reinforce during plant training is the importance of the
pre-use check.
It might not be the most exciting part of operating a dumper, but it’s one of the most important.
Before using a machine, an operator needs to know what they’re looking at and what they’re looking for. A proper check can identify defects, damage or other issues before the machine is put to work.
Tyres, controls, steering, brakes, fluid levels, warning devices and the general condition of the machine all need appropriate attention.
It’s a habit every good operator should have.

Experienced doesn't mean there’s nothing left to learn
An experienced operator course is aimed at someone who already has practical experience with the equipment.
That existing experience is important, but the course also provides an opportunity to make sure the operator is following safe procedures and demonstrating the level of competence required.
Sometimes people pick up little habits over the years. Training gives us the chance to look at how the machine is being operated, reinforce good practice and address anything that could be improved.
From observations and pre-use checks through to manoeuvring and general machine control, the emphasis is on
safe, practical operation in a real working environment.
Training that travels with you
For Paul, there’s another reason for getting everything sorted now – he’s moving to the mainland.
Whether you're staying here on the Isle of Wight or heading further afield, having the right training behind you can be an important part of demonstrating your competence to a current or future employer.
So, Paul, all the best with the move and whatever comes next. Hopefully the dumper skills will come in handy – although I’m sure you'll miss the Island eventually!
