Taking Training to New Heights! Rob and Graham Get Their Scissor Lift Skills Nailed
Rob from DC Engineering and Graham from Vestas put their experience to the test during a practical scissor lift training course with Wight Training Services.
TL;DR
- Rob from DC Engineering and Graham from Vestas undertake experienced scissor lift training.
- The course uses a Genie GS-2632 electric scissor lift in a working warehouse environment.
- Training focuses on safe operation, hazard awareness and working confidently at height.
- Experienced operators benefit from revisiting essential safety procedures and demonstrating their competence.
- Wight Training Services provides practical, on-site working at height training across the Isle of Wight.
It's always good to see experienced operators getting stuck into their training, especially when it involves getting a few metres off the ground!
I've recently been working with Rob from DC Engineering and Graham from Vestas, who were putting their skills to the test during an experienced scissor lift course.
We were using a Genie GS-2632 electric scissor lift in a busy warehouse environment, surrounded by tall pallet racking and plenty of obstacles to keep everyone on their toes.
And as you can see from the photos, the lads certainly got some height under them!
Experience Is Great, but Training Still Matters
One thing I always remind people is that no matter how long you've been operating machinery, there's always value in revisiting the basics.
Experienced scissor lift training isn't about teaching someone who's been using the equipment for years how to press the up and down buttons.
It's about making sure they understand the machine, recognise potential hazards and can demonstrate safe operating practices.
For Rob and Graham, that meant putting their existing knowledge and practical skills to good use while reinforcing the important safety procedures.
It's Not Just About Going Up and Down!
Operating a scissor lift safely involves much more than raising and lowering the platform.
Before starting work, operators need to check the machine, assess the working area and make sure conditions are suitable.
And when you're working around warehouse racking, there's plenty to consider!
Overhead obstructions, limited space, nearby equipment and the risk of trapping or crushing all need careful attention.
We also covered the importance of understanding the machine's limitations, maintaining awareness of what's happening at ground level and knowing what to do in an emergency.
Working safely at height is about understanding your surroundings just as much as knowing how to operate the equipment.
Why Experienced Operator Training Is Worthwhile
For employers, experienced operator training is a useful way to check that employees still have the knowledge and practical ability needed to operate equipment safely.
Under the Work at Height Regulations 2005, employers must ensure that people involved in work at height are competent, or appropriately supervised while being trained.
Practical training and assessment can help identify gaps in knowledge, reinforce good habits and support safer working practices.
And by delivering training at the workplace, I can make it relevant to the equipment and conditions operators encounter in their everyday jobs.
Good Work, Lads!
A big well done to Rob and Graham for getting stuck into their course.
It's always a pleasure working with experienced operators who are happy to demonstrate their skills and have a good discussion about safe working practices.
Thanks for making it an enjoyable session, lads.
Keep up the good work – and stay safe up there!
