From Experience to Certification: Telehandler Training in Action

Josh from Greenscapes Tree Care and Woodland Management puts his skills to the test on a rotating telehandler.

TL;DR:

  • Josh from Greenscapes completed his experienced telehandler assessment.
  • Training took place on-site using workplace equipment.
  • The course focused on safe handling, stability and precision control.
  • Experienced operators still benefit from formal refresher and certification training.
  • Another example of practical plant and machinery training on the Isle of Wight.

There’s a big difference between operating machinery regularly and holding a recognised qualification for it. Recently I spent time with Josh from Greenscapes Tree Care and Woodland Management, who was putting his skills to the test to gain his experienced telehandler operator ticket.

Josh already had plenty of real-world experience using this impressive rotating telehandler, but formal training ensures those skills meet the latest safety standards and industry expectations.

Working through a full series of manoeuvres, load handling exercises and safety checks, Josh demonstrated the kind of control and awareness that experienced operators develop over years on the job.

As with all the training I deliver, the course took place on-site using the company’s own equipment, which makes a big difference.

“Training on the machines operators actually use every day helps them develop confidence and precision in a familiar working environment.”

In this case, the machine was a Merlo Roto telehandler, a powerful and versatile bit of kit often used in construction, forestry, and agricultural work. With its rotating turret and stabilisers, it offers flexibility that standard telehandlers don’t — but it also requires careful control and understanding of load stability.

During the assessment, Josh worked through a range of key skills including:

  • Pre-use safety inspections
  • Correct stabiliser deployment
  • Safe lifting and placement of loads
  • Controlled boom movement and positioning
  • Safe travel across uneven ground

The goal of an experienced operator course isn’t to teach from scratch — it’s about confirming that existing operators are working safely, efficiently, and in line with recognised industry standards.

And Josh handled the challenge brilliantly.

This kind of training is particularly valuable for businesses like Greenscapes, where telehandlers are used in varied environments such as woodland sites, farms and outdoor work areas, often on uneven or muddy ground.

Getting operators properly qualified not only improves safety but also helps employers demonstrate compliance with workplace regulations.

If your team already operates plant equipment but doesn’t yet hold a recognised qualification, an experienced operator course is a practical way to confirm skills and gain certification.

At Wight Training Services, I provide professional, on-site training across the Isle of Wight, covering telehandlers, excavators, forklift trucks and more. Training is delivered using your own equipment so operators learn in the environment they actually work in.

Whether you’re looking for a refresher, conversion, or a recognised qualification for your team, I can help. If you’ve been searching for FLT training near me, get in touch and we’ll arrange training that works around your business.
