Keeping Skills Sharp: Multidirectional Forklift Refresher at Roofstore

Tim Benton • March 26, 2026

Why refresher training is essential for safe, efficient operation of specialist trucks like the multidirectional forklift.

TL;DR:

  • John and Dean completed their multidirectional forklift refresher.
  • Training focused on safe handling of long loads in tight spaces.
  • Reinforced best practice, control and awareness.
  • Conducted on-site using real materials and working conditions.
  • Refresher courses help maintain safety and compliance.

Even experienced operators benefit from going back to basics.

John and Dean at Roofstore recently completed their multidirectional forklift refresher training, and it is a great example of why regular training is so important—especially when working with specialist equipment.

Multidirectional trucks, like the Combilift seen here, are designed to handle long and awkward loads such as timber. They are incredibly useful in busy yard and warehouse environments, but they also demand a high level of control and awareness from the operator.

Refresher training is not about starting again—it is about sharpening existing skills.

Over time, it is easy for small habits to creep in. Maybe it is positioning, awareness of surroundings, or how loads are handled in confined spaces. A refresher course brings everything back into focus and reinforces the correct, safe way of working.

As I always say, “experience is valuable—but only when it is backed up by good habits.”

Working with long loads, like the timber stacks shown here, adds another layer of complexity. Operators need to think about load stability, turning space, visibility and the impact of uneven ground or tight aisles. Multidirectional forklifts allow sideways movement, which is a huge advantage—but only when used correctly.

That is why on-site refresher training works so well.

By training at Roofstore, John and Dean were able to practise in their actual working environment—around real stock, real layouts and the same space restrictions they deal with every day. That makes the training immediately relevant and far more effective than a generic off-site course.

The session covered:

  • Safe manoeuvring in confined areas
  • Correct handling of long loads
  • Awareness of surroundings and pedestrian safety
  • Efficient stacking and retrieval techniques
  • Reinforcing daily checks and safe operation

The result? More confident operators, safer working practices, and a stronger overall standard on site.

Refresher training is not just a recommendation—it is part of maintaining a safe workplace. It helps reduce accidents, protects staff, and ensures operators remain competent and compliant with current expectations.

Whether it is a reach truck, counterbalance forklift truck, or a specialist multidirectional machine, keeping skills up to date is essential.
