From First Turns to Real-World Loads: Theo Completes His B1 Forklift Training
A hands-on novice counterbalance forklift course at Osel Enterprises/Wight Crystal finishes with live workplace lifting tasks.
TL;DR:
- Theo completed his B1 Novice Counterbalance Forklift course
- Training took place on-site at Osel Enterprises/Wight Crystal
- Exercises progressed from steering basics to advanced lifting tasks
- The course finished with real workplace loading operations
- Practical on-site training helps build operator confidence quickly
Another successful forklift training course completed this week at Osel Enterprises/Wight Crystal, where Theo worked through his B1 Novice Counterbalance Forklift training from the very beginning right through to real-world workplace operations.
One of the best parts of novice training is seeing confidence grow over the course of a few days. Starting with the fundamentals — basic steering exercises, safe manoeuvring, and understanding the controls — Theo steadily progressed into more advanced practical work including stacking, load placement, and precision lifting.
By the final day, things lined up perfectly when a delivery arrived on-site, giving Theo the opportunity to finish his course carrying out genuine workplace lifts in a live working environment.
That’s one of the biggest advantages of on-site forklift training. Rather than learning in an unfamiliar training centre, operators get experience using the actual equipment, layouts, and working conditions they’ll face day to day. It helps build confidence far more naturally and makes the training immediately relevant to the job.
The Toyota counterbalance forklift used during the course provided a great platform for learning, allowing Theo to work through a wide variety of lift scenarios safely and progressively. From handling awkward loads to positioning materials accurately in tighter spaces, the course covered the sort of tasks operators regularly face in busy commercial environments.
As Tim Benton explains:
“The goal with novice training is always to build good habits from day one. When operators can finish a course carrying out real workplace tasks confidently and safely, that’s exactly what you want to see.”
It’s also a reminder that forklift training isn’t simply about passing a test — it’s about creating safer workplaces, protecting staff, and helping businesses operate more efficiently.
Congratulations to Theo on completing his B1 novice training, and thanks to the team at Osel Enterprises/Wight Crystal for having Wight Training Services on-site
Supporting Skills and Opportunities at Osel Enterprises

It was also great to deliver this training alongside the team at Osel Enterprises — an Isle of Wight organisation that has been supporting people with disabilities through training, employment, and inclusion opportunities since 1988.
Standing for Outstanding Support, Education and Learning, Osel works closely with local services, families, carers, and organisations across the Island to provide meaningful opportunities and support for people with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, autism, and mental health challenges.
Their three inclusion enterprises each play an important role within the local community:
- Way Forward Programme – offering support sessions and tailored learning opportunities for people with learning and physical disabilities and autism.
- Working Towards Wellbeing – supporting employment opportunities for people with mental ill health and disabilities.
- Wight Crystal – a charity producing and selling spring water products to help fund vital support services across the Isle of Wight.
It’s always rewarding to work with organisations that are so focused on developing people’s confidence, skills, and independence — values that fit perfectly with practical workplace training.
