Keeping Skills Shipshape: B1 Forklift Refresher Training at Cowes Yacht Haven

Tim Benton • April 21, 2026

Practical refresher training helps experienced operators stay safe, confident and compliant in one of the Isle of Wight's busiest marine environments.

TL;DR:

  • Luke and Simon completed their B1 forklift refresher training.
  • Training took place on-site at Cowes Yacht Haven.
  • Refresher courses reinforce safe habits and update best practice.
  • Marine environments present unique forklift operating challenges.
  • On-site training ensures operators learn in their everyday workplace.

Keeping Skills Sharp in a Unique Working Environment

One of the best parts of my job is delivering training in workplaces that each bring their own challenges, and Cowes Yacht Haven is certainly one of the most distinctive.

Recently, I spent the day with Luke and Simon, who completed their B1 Forklift Truck Refresher training using their own equipment in the heart of one of the world's best-known sailing destinations.

Working around yachts, lifting equipment, workshops, pedestrians and visiting boat owners requires operators to remain alert at all times. Every movement of the truck has to be controlled, planned and carried out safely, making refresher training an important part of maintaining high operating standards.

Why Refresher Training Matters

A B1 refresher course isn't simply about renewing a certificate. It's an opportunity for experienced operators to revisit the fundamentals, refresh safe working practices and correct any habits that may have developed over time.

During the course we covered topics including:

  • Daily pre-use inspections
  • Safe load handling and stability
  • Manoeuvring in confined spaces
  • Working safely around pedestrians and other vehicles
  • Correct stacking and de-stacking techniques
  • Current health and safety best practice

Even operators with years of experience often pick up useful reminders or learn a more efficient way of carrying out everyday tasks.

Training Where You Actually Work

One of the biggest advantages of on-site training is that delegates use the same forklift truck and work in the same environment they encounter every day.

At Cowes Yacht Haven that means operating within an active marina where space can be limited, visibility changes throughout the day, and expensive vessels and equipment demand careful handling.

By training in these real-world conditions, operators gain practical experience that's directly relevant to their job, rather than practising in an unfamiliar training centre.

Supporting Safe Operations at Cowes Yacht Haven

Cowes Yacht Haven sits right at the centre of the Isle of Wight's sailing community. Hosting internationally recognised events such as Cowes Week, the Round the Island Race, the Admirals Cup, and numerous other regattas, it's a busy working marina all year round.

With 260 fully serviced berths, lift and launch facilities including a 50-ton hoist, 25-ton boat mover and 15-ton mobile crane, alongside on-site marine engineers, repair specialists and extensive visitor facilities, safe vehicle operation is essential to keeping everything running smoothly.

It's always rewarding to work with businesses like Cowes Yacht Haven that invest in regular operator training and place safety at the centre of their daily operations.

A Great Day's Training

Congratulations to Luke and Simon on successfully completing their B1 refresher. They approached the day with a professional attitude, plenty of experience and a willingness to keep learning—exactly the mindset that helps maintain a safe workplace.

As I often say, good operators never stop learning. Refresher training keeps skills current, builds confidence and helps ensure everyone goes home safely at the end of the working day.
