Building Skills from the Ground Up: Wight Contractors' Ongoing Commitment to Safe Plant Operation

Tim Benton • June 16, 2026

From refresher training to experienced operator courses, Wight Contractors continue to invest in their team, their skills and a safer future.

TL;DR:

  • Harvey is preparing for his Experienced Operator 360 Excavator course.
  • Dale and Toby recently completed their 360 Excavator Refresher training.
  • Wight Contractors have consistently invested in operator training over recent years.
  • Previous training included Damian and Morgan's refresher and Spider Boom training for Rob and Morgan.
  • Ongoing training demonstrates a genuine commitment to workplace safety and professional development.

Training Isn't a One-Off – It's an Investment

One thing I've always admired is when a company sees training as an ongoing investment rather than simply something to tick off a compliance checklist.

That's certainly the case with Wight Contractors.

Over the past couple of years, I've had the pleasure of working with several members of the team across a variety of plant and access equipment courses, and it's been fantastic to watch their commitment to developing operator skills continue to grow.

Most recently, Harvey has been preparing for his 360 Excavator Experienced Operator Course, spending time practising on the company's Takeuchi TB230 excavator before assessment day.

Alongside him, Dale and Toby—the boss himself—completed their 360 Excavator Refresher training, ensuring their existing skills remain sharp and up to date.

It's exactly the sort of approach that creates safer operators and stronger businesses.

Experience Never Stops Growing

People often assume that experienced operators don't need much training.

In reality, the opposite is true.

Experience provides confidence, but refresher and experienced operator courses help ensure that confidence is backed up by current best practice, safe techniques and a thorough understanding of the machine.

During training we revisited:

  • Daily inspections and defect reporting
  • Safe machine set-up before excavation
  • Excavation techniques and machine control
  • Working safely on varying ground conditions
  • Awareness of underground and overhead hazards
  • Stability, slew awareness and safe working practices
  • Current health and safety responsibilities

For Harvey, the experienced operator course is an opportunity to formally demonstrate the skills he's built through practical work. For Dale and Toby, the refresher course reinforces good habits while ensuring they remain up to date with current standards.

As I often tell delegates:

"Good operators don't stop learning just because they've gained experience. The best operators are the ones who are always willing to improve."

A Long-Term Commitment to Training

This isn't the first time Wight Contractors have invested in developing their workforce.

Last year, Damian and Morgan completed their 360 Excavator Refresher training, reinforcing the safe operating practices required when using excavators in day-to-day construction and landscaping work.

Later in the year, Rob and Morgan also completed their Experienced Operator Spider Boom Lift course, expanding the company's capability when working safely at height.

Now, with Harvey progressing through his experienced operator training and Dale and Toby refreshing their excavator skills, it's clear that training forms an important part of how the business operates.

Rather than waiting until qualifications expire, Wight Contractors continue investing in their people, ensuring operators remain competent, confident and capable across a range of machinery.

Why On-Site Training Makes the Difference

One of the biggest advantages of delivering training on-site is that operators learn using the machines they work with every day.

For this course, that included the Takeuchi TB230, a popular 3-tonne excavator widely used for construction and landscaping projects, alongside practical familiarisation on the compact Kubota U10-5 micro excavator for work in tighter spaces.

Training in the real working environment allows delegates to tackle the challenges they'll actually face on site, making the learning immediately relevant and far more valuable than working on unfamiliar equipment elsewhere.

Investing in People Builds Better Businesses

Construction and groundwork demand skilled operators who can work safely, efficiently and confidently.

The businesses that consistently invest in training tend to see the benefits every day—not just through improved compliance, but through greater productivity, reduced risk and increased confidence across the workforce.

Watching Wight Contractors continue to build on previous training, develop existing staff and encourage new operators is exactly what good workplace training is all about.

Congratulations to Harvey, Dale and Toby on another successful round of training, and thank you once again to everyone at Wight Contractors for continuing to place such importance on developing your team.

I look forward to seeing who's behind the controls next.
